Riddick

Peter Wanat the Producer for Riddick came to me early on in production and asked my opinion on the use of Normal Mapping. I had expressed to the executive staff at Universal that it was a technology we couldn't ignore. So when I heard Peter's question I did a back-flip in the office. Remember, that Riddick was the first game released using Normal Mapping. Before Doom 3 and Half-Life 2.

When the production began it was very hush-hush even in the office at Universal. The developer had come upon a snag where they felt the rooms they were making all looked the same and concerned about being boring asked if I could contribute.

I was privy to the production on Riddick and Peter was kind enough to load it on my dev station so that I could review it at my leisure. I came up with a critique that I sent to the developer with some advice on color and value (see panel 1 on the left).

Riddick was and still is g-r-e-a-t. I only did two other things for the Production and one was the marketing poster above (using existing Riddick image) and the other a video explaining Normal Mapping for the web site. That video can be found here. The images, script and animation was done entirely by me; the voice actor's voice was dubbed in later.
